At the post upper-secondary level Västernorrland can offer both qualified vocational training and education at folk high schools. Mid Sweden University is one of Sweden´s largest seats of learning with close to 13,000 students and with campuses in Härnösand, Sundsvall, Örnsköldsvik, and Östersund. Umeå University also offers courses in Örnsköldsvik to about 350 students.
The paper and pulp industry, environmental engineering, and the crisis, conflict and rescue sector are examples of areas where Västernorrland has taken leading positions and is represented by many successful companies. These industries working both individually and together provide interesting job opportunities. Early in their education, pupils work with local businesses and begin to take active part in developing entrepreneurial skills. By developing our base industries and areas of specialty, the entire community develops. The need for labor is gradually increasing in the care, building, and experience industries.
